When your relationship is built on games, laughter, and sneaky college adventures, you know your love story is going to be one-of-a-kind. That’s exactly what Marybeth and Max brought to their prairie engagement session in Big Lake, MN—a joyful, goofy, refreshingly them kind of vibe that made for the most magical evening.

These two had never had professional photos taken as a couple (can you believe it?!)—but you’d never know it. They were naturals in front of the camera, and it was such a joy to capture their playful connection against the soft golden grasses of the prairie.
From a Sand Volleyball Game to Forever
Marybeth and Max first met during their freshman year at the University of Minnesota Morris. After tennis practice one day, Marybeth joined some teammates to play sand volleyball. Max, who was in a group chat with one of those teammates, showed up—and from that spontaneous game came a slow burn of hangouts, dating, moving in together, and eventually, getting engaged on May 13th. 💍
Marybeth describes their relationship as “goofy nerds.” They’re the kind of couple who can turn anything into fun—board games, card games, even cribbage on a picnic blanket (yes, we made that happen!).

A Prairie Session Full of Personality
We met up in Big Lake, Minnesota for their session—one of my favorite hidden gems for soft light, wide open space, and prairie beauty. They brought their university merch for a cozy, nostalgic touch and even a cribbage board to incorporate their love of games. Little personal details like that? Photo gold.
Marybeth absolutely is stunning. Her smile and the way Max looks at her? Pure magic. Her confidence grew with every click of the shutter, and by the end, they were laughing, relaxed, and glowing.

Favorite Dates & Tunnel Adventures
Their favorite date stories are the kind you have to hear. Marybeth’s? Sneaking into the maintenance tunnels under their college and signing their names on the “forbidden wall” (iconic). Max’s? Watching Barbie at a drive-in theater—his first time ever. Whether they’re breaking the rules or just cuddling up in the car, they bring joy wherever they go.
