There’s something so sweet about capturing families right in the middle of the busy, chaotic, love-filled season of life with little ones. The Malepsy family (David, Christina, their two kids Stevie and Miles, and even their dog Woody) joined me for a playful evening at a beautiful park in Monticello. As a MN photographer, I love sessions like this where I get to freeze both the posed family portraits and the unplanned laughter that makes family life so memorable.

From the moment we started, Stevie was busy making Miles giggle, and Miles was all about soaking up the attention from his big sister. The energy of toddlers and the sweetness of babies make for the best mix...full of fun, snuggles, and just the right amount of chaos.

Balancing Posed and Playful Family Photos
One of my favorite parts of this session was blending posed portraits with candid, in-the-moment shots. We started with traditional family pictures where everyone was looking at the camera — perfect for holiday cards and framed prints. Then, once the formal shots were done, I encouraged the family to play and interact naturally.
That’s when the magic really happens. Stevie loved tickling Miles, running around her parents, and sneaking in snuggles with Woody the dog. Christina and David shared sweet moments holding the kids and laughing together. These are the photos that tell a family’s story in the most authentic way.

Tips for Stress-Free Family Photos
As a MN photographer, I know how stressful family photos can feel, especially with little ones. Here are a few tips I always share with families to help their session go smoother:
Keep expectations realistic. Kids don’t have to sit still or smile perfectly in every photo. Some of the best images come from natural interactions and playful moments.
Plan around naps & meals. A well-rested, fed toddler or baby is much more likely to be happy during your session.
Bring small comforts. A favorite toy, blanket, or even snacks can go a long way to keeping little ones calm.
Embrace the chaos. Family sessions are about connection, not perfection. If your kids are laughing, playing, or even being a little silly, that’s part of your story.
Trust your photographer. My job is to guide you, help you feel comfortable, and capture your family in the best light (literally and figuratively!)

Why Choose a MN Photographer for Your Family?
Minnesota offers so many stunning backdrops for family photography. From quiet riverside parks to wide-open fields. Monticello was the perfect location for the Malepsy family, with beautiful greenery, open space for Stevie to run, and soft evening light that added a dreamy glow.
Choosing a local MN photographer means you’ll work with someone who knows the area, understands how to make kids feel comfortable, and knows how to capture the unique beauty of Minnesota’s seasons. Whether you’re looking for updated family portraits, playful candid moments, or a mix of both, your photos should reflect who you are as a family right now.

Final Thoughts from the Session
The Malepsy family’s session was full of laughter, cuddles, and the sweetest sibling moments. I loved capturing their closeness and documenting this stage of life they’ll never get back. Sessions like this remind me why I love being a MN photographer. It’s not just about taking pictures, it’s about preserving memories that families can look back on for years to come.
