How to Prepare for a Couples Photo Session: Tips and Tricks to Take Stunning Photos Together

This beautiful fall day was full of giggles and joy while I got to capture Makayla and Addison’s beaming relationship! Their love is so fun and joyful. They have been dating for over 3 years, but if you spend a little time with them, you will think that it was just yesterday that they fell in love.

This was Makayla and Addison's first experience capturing loving memories through a couple’s photo session together...and they definitely rocked it! They are absolutely adorable when they are having fun together.

Since this was their first photo session, I wanted to use Makayla and Addison's couples session as an example to show my future couples that those camera-nerves are totally normal, and it's still possible to take stunning photos together even if you’re a little shy. I'm going to share my best tips and tricks to prepare for your couple’s photo session.

Look over the style guide!

I include a style guide in the booking confirmation email for every session. The style guide will set your mind at ease because it goes over what to expect at the session (and after our time together!), tips on what to wear, and you’ll get to know me better.

Answer your questionnaire honestly!

I will ask you a couple of questions during your booking process to get to know you and your other half. This also gives me all the information I need to capture your relationship in a way that you’ll love, and you can let your guard down knowing I’ve got your back.

Watch my behind-the-scenes videos!

I post behind-the-scenes videos on Instagram and TikTok. These videos are great to watch when you’re feeling excited! It will give you a little glimpse into a couple’s session. You will also get to see how some poses and prompts look as a final image!

Book professional hair and makeup!

I highly recommend investing in professional hair and makeup for couples’ sessions. The impact that well executed hair and makeup has on your professional photos is quite amazing! Photography makeup is typically a little different than everyday makeup (heavier and bolder), so that it shows up on camera in the way you want it to! It can be tricky to master the proper application and blending techniques without an expert eye. I will recommend some of the best hair and makeup artists around the Twin Cities in my style guide!

Make your session a date night!

I typically plan photo sessions about an hour before sunset to give us the best light. This sets you two love birds up for the ultimate date night! I always recommend finding an amazing local restaurant to “dine and unwind” after your session. You two will already be looking like movie stars, so choose a high-end establishment for your dinner plans.
